DEXA Is Here: The Most Accurate Body Composition and Bone Density Scanning—Now at Yakima Men’s Clinic

After a long wait, we’re excited to announce that our DEXA scanner has finally arrived at Yakima Men’s Clinic! We ordered this machine back in November 2024, with a promised February delivery. But, like many things in logistics, the timeline got delayed (we’re still not sure why)—and we didn’t receive the unit until the first week of June.

Since then, we’ve been offering DEXA scans to patients—and the results have been eye-opening. During our training sessions, I got scanned myself, and to my surprise, I found I had low bone density in my spine. My spine is low-density enough to be considered “osteopenia”, which is one step before osteoporosis. I’m an active guy. I eat well, lift weights, and take care of my health. If I hadn’t done the scan, I would have had no idea that I had low bone density in my spine. In contrast, my hip and forearm have significantly above average bone density.  This is the power of DEXA: it gives you insight that you simply can’t get from a scale or a basic physical exam.

What is a DEXA Scan?

DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) is the gold standard for measuring two things:

  1. Body Composition – This scan shows your body fat percentage, lean muscle mass, and crucially, visceral fat, which is the fat around your organs. Visceral fat is a major marker for metabolic health risk. It’s strongly associated with diabetes, heart disease, and other chronic conditions.

  2. Bone Density – This is the most accurate test available to assess your risk for osteoporosis or low bone mass, particularly in key areas like the spine and hips.

You can choose to do either type of scan individually or bundle them together for a discount. (That being said the Body Composition test does give you some bone density information–the information on the specific bone density tests are just more specific for diagnosing low bone mass and osteoporosis, because they focus on the body parts that are most likely to fracture.)

Pricing Options

We’ve tried to keep our pricing as straightforward and affordable as possible:

  • One Scan (either body composition OR bone density): $120

  • Both Scans (done together): $200 (save $40)

  • One Scan (either body composition OR bone density), done NOW + Once more in the future : $200 (save $40)
  • Both Scans NOW + Both Scans LATER (total of 4 scans): $350 (save $130)

Why offer multiple scan packages? Because tracking change over time is where DEXA really shines. If you’re on a weight loss journey, starting testosterone therapy, changing your workout routine, or just want to make sure your bones are staying strong as you age—baseline and follow-up scans let us monitor progress with precision.

Why DEXA?

There are a lot of “body fat tests” out there—smart scales, calipers, InBody machines—but DEXA is the most accurate method available. It breaks your body down into fat mass, lean mass, and bone mass, and it’s the only scan that shows visceral fat, the most dangerous kind.

For example: two people could weigh the same and have the same BMI, but one could have twice the visceral fat—and a much higher cardiometabolic risk. With DEXA, we can see that difference and take action early.

The power of tracking.

The most powerful thing about DEXA is what it empowers you to do:

  • Track fat loss and muscle gain over time with precision

  • See your visceral fat levels, not just subcutaneous fat

  • Monitor bone health and catch signs of osteopenia or osteoporosis early

  • Make smarter decisions about diet, exercise, supplements, and medication

  • Get a true baseline before starting a new health program (like TRT or weight loss treatment)

We already have patients using the scan as part of their treatment plans. Some are doing it before starting semaglutide so they can track fat loss vs. muscle loss. Others are using it in the middle of a strength training program to see if they’re really building lean mass. Some just want to know their bone density so they don’t get caught off guard like I did.

How to Book

We’ve made scheduling simple. You can make an appointment for your scan directly through our online booking site. You don’t need to be a clinic member to get a DEXA scan—anyone can book one.

👉Visit our booking page to schedule your DEXA!  Make sure you pick “DEXA” as the appointment type.

We scan in-clinic and it the scan itself takes 6 minutes. You remain fully clothed (no metal zippers/buttons), and there’s no pain, no discomfort, and extremely low radiation exposure (less than spending the day outside).

If you’re serious about your health, a DEXA scan is one of the best investments you can make. Whether you’re trying to lose fat, gain muscle, optimize performance, or just stay ahead of long-term risks, this scan gives you the data you need to do it smarter.

We’re excited to finally bring this service to Yakima—and to help our community get more clarity and control over their health.

See you in the scan room.
